Covering numerous local developments, Balmaseda eventually left The Herald to become Central America bureau chief for Newsweek, a position that was based in El Salvador.  Later, she became a field producer for NBC News.  In 1987, she returned to The Miami Herald as a feature writer.  In this role, she was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in 1993 for her writings about the plight of Cuban and Haitian refugees.  She was awarded another Pulitzer for breaking-news reporting in 2001.  During that same year she also won the Hispanic Heritage Award for Literature.

Encinosa, Enrique https://cubansinamerica.us/prominent-cuban-americans/journalism/enrique-encinosa/ https://cubansinamerica.us/prominent-cuban-americans/journalism/enrique-encinosa/#respond Thu, 27 May 2021 21:54:28 +0000 https://cubansinamerica.us/?p=1336 Born in 1949 and arriving to exile in the United States in 1961, Havana-born Enrique Encinosa is a Cuban researcher, writer and radio personality who started his career in New Jersey writing about boxing history.  His first book was titled “Boxing: This Is It!”.

After graduating with a Degree in Literature and Journalism from Purdue UniversityEncinosa moved to Miami, Florida, where he continued writing about sports as well as Cuban history and politics.  He became known for chronicling the history of the Escambray fighters for English-speaking audiences. The Escrambray guerrillas were made up by a group of Cuban peasants who took up arms to challenge the Castro dictatorship in the early 1960’s. Many of the Escambray men and women who were not executed were exiled to Miami in the late 1970’s to mid 1980’s. Encinosa has produced several audio-visual projects and books (including “Escambray: La Guerra Olvidada”) on the lives and stories of such Cuban figures.

He published “Cuba: The Unfinished Revolution” in 1988, one of the first books of its kind that detailed the anti-Castro struggle on the island from 1959 onward.

Encinosa currently resides in Miami, where he has continued to write about sports and Cuba, including works of fiction about the Cuban struggle.  He hosts and produces a popular AM Spanish-language radio show, “El Mundo al Dia”,  on 670 AM ‘La Poderosa’.

Ms. Flores arrived in Miami in 1959 and almost immediately began working at WMIE radio. Since moving to Radio Mambi, her call-in show has been a fixture of late-night talk radio in South Florida.

Ms. Flores has received numerous awards in recognition of her career in journalism. In 2004, she received United Homecare’s Public Awareness/Media Award. In 2014, the Miami-Dade County School Board honored Ms. Flores with a proclamation for a career in journalism that has spanned over 55 years. Passed away on  July 18, 2020.

A radio and television broadcaster he has covered events of political and social impact and interviewed a long list of leaders such as Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Margaret Thatcher, Oscar Arias, Alberto Fujimori and José María Aznar among others. Fusté’s long career includes numerous radio commercials and voiceover work, as well as shows on Radio Swan, La Fabulosa Radio, WQBA, and radio stations in New York City. In July 2017 he started a new program Tardes con Fusté with his also journalist and writer wife Yurina.

Pedro Gomez was born in 1962 in Miami, Florida to Cuban parents. He attended Coral Park High School. After, he went to Miami-Dade Commuty College and the University of Miami.

He covered high schools and general assignment sports in Miami, San Diego and the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1992, he became a full-time baseball beat writer in 1992, covering the Oakland Athletics for the San Jose Mercury News and Sacramento Bee from 1990 to 1997.

He is now a Phoenix-based reporter for ESPN’s SportsCenter show. He has covered 15 World Series, and more than 10 All-Star Games and is a voting member for the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Luis Leonel León was born on April 7, 1971 in La Habana, Cuba. He is a journalist, writer, and documentary filmmaker. Member of Academia de la Historia de Cuba en el Exilio (AHCE) board of directors and editor of the Anuario Histórico CubanoAmericano, for which he has coordinated dossiers on Cuba’s history and culture. Director of the cultural and editorial project Colección Fugas (coleccionfugas.com) dedicated to the literature and arts of the diaspora, where he has published works by Carlos Alberto Montaner and other classics of exile. Founder and publisher of the magazine El Nuevo Conservador (elnuevoconservador.com). 

Author of documentary series about Cuba and its exiles: Mariel 40 años, Brigada 2506 héroes cubanos, and 8×8 mujeres cubanas en busca de la libertad. Other of his award-winning documentaries are Habaneceres, La gracia de volver and Coro de ciudad. Newspapers in America and Europe publish his opinion column. Mr. Hernandez began his career in Chicago as a radio anchor for Radio Latina AM and later for Radio Ambiente FM. He moved to Miami in 1984, where he worked at Union Radio and SuperQ FM, a branch of WQBA

In 1987, he joined Univision as co-anchor of “5 y 30 en Punto” on Univision 23 and later as co-anchor of Univision’s “Noticias y Mas” and “Al Mediodia.” For over 20 years, Mr. Hernandez anchored Telemundo 51’s news broadcast in Miami before returning to Univision in 2015.

Mr. Hernandez is an eight-time Emmy award and Silver Circle award winner.

Le Batard received his Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism and Politics from the University of Miami and began working at The Miami Herald in 1990, where he continues to write as a columnist for the sports section. He also hosts a popular morning radio show on ESPN Radio, The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz.  The program is co-hosted by sports writer Jon Weiner, known as Stugotz. The show is characterized by humor, in addition to sports news and developments.

Dan also contributes to other programs within the ESPN network, including Outside the Lines, The Sports Reporters, Pardon the Interruption and College GameDay.

Born in Havana, Ms. Marquez arrived in the United States in 1959 with her family. She grew up in Miami and earned a degree in journalism from the University of Maryland in 1983.

Following graduation from the University of Maryland, Marquez covered Washington, D.C., and Maryland for United Press International for four years, serving as its bureau chief in Annapolis. She moved to Orlando in 1987 to write editorials for the Sentinel.

Marquez joined the Miami Herald in 2005 as deputy editor of the Metro team, coordinating coverage of Latin American and Caribbean communities in South Florida. By 2009 she was chosen to oversee the opinion pages in both the print and online editions. She was the first woman and Hispanic to lead the opinion pages of the Miami Herald.

During her tenure at the Herald, she led several award-winning projects, including coverage of suspected torture in the Krome detention center, local politics, higher education and the changing profile of the Cuban exile community. In 2009 she won the Green Eyeshade Award from the Society of Professional Journalists for her columns. Marquez was recognized in 2009 by the South Florida Latin Chamber of Commerce and has been included in the list of the 100 Most Influential Hispanics in the nation by Hispanicbusiness.com.

In 2013, she became the executive editor of El Nuevo Herald, where she is in charge of caring for a diverse segment of Hispanic readers in South Florida and the United States, the Caribbean, Latin America and Europe.

Alina Mayo Azze has anchored Noticias 23, Univision’s local Miami news broadcast, since 1991.  She is one of South Florida’s most well-known and respected journalists.

Ms. Mayo Azze is a graduate from the University of Miami.  She began her career as a reporter in Channel 23 in 1981.  She then joined Telemundo, Channel 51 as an anchor in 1988, and returned to Univision in 1991 as anchor.

During her career, she has interviewed world leaders such as President Barack Obama and has covered stories such as the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the death of Princess Diana.

She has received five EMMY awards, four ACRIN awards, and two ACCA awards.
